Walter Mitty and Spreading the Gospel

Pastor David Sternberg of Bridge Christian Church uses a lot of pop culture references in his sermons. I love it when pastors do that because it shows that they really understand are a part of the culture without having to engage in the bad parts of it.

Soon after my family started worshiping at his church in Chattanooga TN he had a sermon based off of the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller. The movie is amazing and very kid-friendly if you think your young ones are mature enough to recognize the message.

Here’s a slide from Pastor David’s sermon to give you an idea of how to apply it spiritually. I’ll let you run with it from here.

You’re Dead to Us. We Hope You Fail.

That’s what was written on the cake at our going away party. I love it!

As we’re closing down the Myrtle Beach location of Kapow Church and moving everything to Chattanooga TN, we held the last two church events. On Saturday we had a going away party at my office for our family and then Sunday was our official last service here.

If you were at either event, I trust you enjoyed one or both. If you weren’t, why not, you wankers?

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank a few people who helped out at the party. We held a silent auction of sorts to raise a little bit of money for our church plant in Chattanooga. Our ministry there will be so decentralized, low key, nontraditional, and weird that not a lot of funding is needed to get started. We made enough from the auction to get things rolling pretty good.

So, here’s my list of hearty thank you’s. If I missed anyone, please feel free to add yourself or them into the comments.

  • Honey Van Buren provided the cake
  • David R. and Teresa Powers provided all the foodstuffs
  • Anita Brinsfield provided cupcakes

The following people provided donations for the silent auction-

  • my lovely wife
  • Brian Saunders of Oddartities
  • Hector Miray of Faith and Fandom
  • The Character Company
  • David R. and Teresa Powers
  • Cuddly Curiosities

When next you hear from me, it’ll be from our new headquarters in the Volunteer State. Keep your eyes and ears open. I promise the next step for us will be weird and magnificent. God is truly taking us to some interesting places.

Is It Possible to Move a Church Across the Country?

Big changes are afoot! I sent this e-mail out to our membership earlier…

Kapow Church is Winding Down

I wanted to reach out to our church community with this request. As you know, we’ll be moving very soon, likely within about a month. This is a faith move for our family. One we feel led to, but certainly not one where everything is perfect by any means. Please pray for us.

Our big prayer right now is that God will prepare a place for us there where we can start a new church effort and also a place to live.

We’ll be making a recon trip in the next couple of weeks to look for a place. Aside from potential rentals and cheap beat up foreclosures that we’ve found online, I actually found a former Jewish synagogue with a parsonage that’s for sale. It would be awesome if we were able to take that over.

As the life of Kapow Church-Myrtle Beach winds down, I’ll keep everyone in the loop, but I just wanted to ask for your prayers right now. It’s a scary thing moving a family this big with little in the way of security or finances. But, then again, if it wasn’t scary then faith wouldn’t be such a big thing.

Thanks!
I also wanted to take the opportunity to reach out to all of you. I’m praying very specifically for a place that God has for us. I would love your prayers in this as well.
